Ridiculously underrated, Joe Budden IS releasing the best material these days. Budden's unique style and witty, captivating lyrics make him break the 30. Possibly a controversial choice, but in my eyes it's a certainty that he's going to be a legend. Joe has shown his ability to spit gritty rhymes and punchlines in 'Focus', he's shown he can be deep with 'Dear Angie', he's shown he can hold the listener's interest for vast amounts of time in '10 mins'. He can drop commercial stuff like 'Pump It Up' and he can freestyle. He can battle, releasing a trio of solid diss records directed at Game called 'Game Over', 'Big Shot' and 'What's Good?'. Currently the most versatile emcee in the game, no question about it. 29. Del Tha Funkee Homosapien The first emcee to blend humor and hip hop together successfully. Del's witty lyrics and consistency make him a dead cert for the top 30. As the leader of Deltron 3030 he released one of the greatest concept albums of all-time. Known for taking complex subjects and mixing them with thoughtful, yet humorous, lyricism on his albums - Del is certainly one of the most influencial and talented rappers to ever pick up a mic. 28. Redman As one of the most popular members of the Wu-Tang Clan, Redman had to drop immaculately on every track to shine along with his fellow members and he did it with ease. Many thought he would struggle without his Wu-Tang brothers but he proved them wrong dropping a classic solo debut ('Whut? Thee Album') in which he kept his satirical, raw lyrics and introduced a unique mixture of reggae and funk to his music. 27. Canibus Possibly one of the most talented emcees to ever drop a verse. Creator of one of the finest 'diss' tracks of all-time ('Second Round K.O.') and a supremely talented lyricist. It's quite a shame that critics panned his under-rated debut album and left a stain on his career that, for all his talent, Canibus simply couldn't wash away. After being verbally attacked by mainstream critics alike, Canibus sought to do what he does best and that is battle his way back on the scene. Canibus proved he's the finest battle emcee alive today and is a favourite of most underground hip hop fans. 26. DMX The king of hardcore hip hop. The most recognizable voice in hip hop. As soon as you hear the gruff, vicious tone you know Dark Man X is about to drop some of the rawest lyrics we've ever seen. DMX has two classic albums under his belt ('Flesh Of My Flesh, Blood Of My Blood' and '...And Then There Was X') and a unique method of captivating his audience by using incredible emotion and brutal lyrics that makes him one of the most well-known rappers in the world today. 25. Prodigy The more talented member of Mobb Deep. Prodigy is mostly known for dropping one of the most memorable and influential verses of all-time on Shook Ones Pt II. Unfortunately his recent work hasn't been quite as good and his solo album wasn't marketed well enough to sell commercially. Prodigy influenced well-known rappers such as Young Buck, 50 Cent and John Cena. He also introduced battle-rapping to the mainstream with Shook Ones and Drop A Gem On 'Em. Now that Prodigy (and Havoc) are getting the mainstream exposure they've always deserved alongside G-Unit, all I can say is: It's a shame it came so late in their careers. 24. GZA The Genius. One of the most purely talented lyricists of all-time. GZA was one of the most slept-on members of the Wu-Tang Clan but made the best solo album out of all of the members. Liquid Swords is a masterpiece, every song holds a meaning and message that needs to get across. GZA uses complex lyrics, deep concepts, precise flows and flawless delivery to make every song notable. Truly one of the best lyricists of all-time. 23. Kurupt 'Calling Out Names' is one of the greatest diss records of all-time. A phenomenal freestyler with a natural talent for spitting raw and witty rhymes. The owner of one of the best flows in the history of hip hop, Kurupt has a classic album to his name ('Tha Streetz Iz A Mutha') and a recognizable voice. It is a shame, however, that more recent material he has dropped has been of a much lower quality. 22. Ras Kass Ask any true hip hop fan who they think is the most poetically talented lyricist ever and they WILL have Ras Kass in their answer. Ras suffers the same problem as Chino XL, Canibus, Royce Da 5'9 and GZA, he's not commercial enough! But this is a good thing! Each one of Ras Kass's songs has a moral, he's not dropping Rap/R&B mixes like so many of today's mainstream artists, he's dropping pure lyricism and verses straight from his heart. 21. Ghostface Killah Possibly the most marketable member of the Wu-Tang Clan, Ghostface is known for his versatility and having a legendary debut album ('Ironman'), a lyrically perfect album ('Supreme Clientele') and having a unique, quick-witted style to his lyrics. It's hard to find another emcee who is quite like Ghostface. 20. Black Thought A major pioneer of alternative rap, leader of one of the finest hip hop groups around, a wonderfully consistent and naturally talented emcee. Black Thought is one of the most influential faces in alternative hip hop today. All of The Roots' albums have been notably good and contained the sort of versatile, polished lyricism that mainstream hip hop lacks today. A particularly talented battle emcee with naturally skilled raw lyrics. Without even dropping a solo album this man makes the top 20. Brilliant. 19. Method Man The first solo star from the Wu-Tang Clan, Method Man combines rough delivery with poetic lyrics to form a fantastic mixture of hardcore and alternative hip hop that made him a star today. Releasing a lyrical masterpiece ('Tical') and three other solid albums, Method Man became known as one of the best New York has to offer. 18. Raekwon In my opinion, the best overall emcee out of the Wu-Tang Clan. Raekwon has the sort of consistency that the other members were slightly lacking. Two classic albums ('Only Built 4 Cuban Linx') and 'The Lex Diamond Story') and a solid sophomore effort {'Immobilarity') have made him known as one of the most consistent rappers ever. His skill can be summed up through one song, 'Verbal Intercourse', the sort of flow that Jay-Z would envy, lyricism that makes 2Pac look like Vanilla Ice and a natural charisma that holds your interest and leaves you hanging on every word. 17. Talib Kweli Talib Kweli possesses the greatest political awareness in the hip hop world. Bar no-one. Chuck D may have made political rap a recognized genre but no-one has done it with the correctness and lyricism of Talib Kweli. A well-rounded emcee who's concepts are lively and interesting, despite the fact that he's not someone I'd recommend to a beginner with hip hop he's still got to go down as one of the best. 16. Mos Def Mos Def is perhaps the greatest alternative hip hop artists of all-time. Starting off as a legend-in-the-making before turning to acting and rap-rock. In my eyes, no-one is quite as versatile as Mos Def. He's a phenomenally talented poet, dealing with social and political issues through his music and forming one of the finest rap groups of all-time with Talib Kweli, Black Star. A class act. 15. Scarface The greatest 'Dirty South' rapper of all-time. Bar no-one. Scarface is instantly recognizable for pioneering southern rap and defining it as an established hip hop genre. A former member of the best hip hop group of all-time, Geto Boys, Scarface may not be a chart-topper but his distinct flow, unique voice and complex lyrics established him as one of the greats. Classic. 14. Kool G Rap Never mention the golden-age of hip hop without noting Kool G Rap as one of the biggest pioneers. Hip Hop would be nothing today without this man, as a leading member of the Juice Crew he never quite got the publicity he deserved as a hardcore emcee. Still a talented emcee, and will always be considered a legend in the world of hip hop. 13. Common Common can do it all. Release a classic album ('Like Water For Chocolate'). Release a classic diss track ('The B***h In Yoo'). Address social and political issues through music {'One Day It'll All Make Sense'). Become a mainstream star without falling off ('Be'). Use a different style to his normal and still sound polished ('Electric Circus'). No matter what people think of his political views, Common has achieved everything that can be achieved and established his name as a major player in the industry. 12. AZ AZ, the greatest flow to ever grace hip hop. What more can I say? Doe Or Die is one of the finest records ever released, 2 shockingly under-rated albums and of course Aziatic, a classic from the moment it hit the shelves. AZ has shown he can still, after all these years, drop a phenomenal album ('AWOL') and no matter how under-rated he is by the mainstream, he'll always be considered one of the most original and talented emcees ever to enter a mic booth. 11. LL Cool J Now, much as I think he fell off after Mama Said Knock You Out - one of the best albums ever - I still place LL in the top 20. His debut album Radio is perhaps the perfect entrance into the hip hop game. LL's brash, witty, not to mention cocky and hostile rhyming delivery made him a star. Before LL, no-one had quite put so much emotion and confidence into their lyrics and delivery. Instantly recognizable, with a string of classic albums but like I said, he fell off after Mama Said Knock You Out. 10. Chuck D Ah, Chuck D, the pioneer of politically-infused rap. The greatest emcee of the golden-age. The most intense, cerebral rapper of the late-80's to early-90's. No-one did it quite like him, the fact that his only solo album ('Autobiography of Mistachuck') wasn't a masterpiece is the only reason he's not in the top 5. Everything his group, Public Enemy, released was classic and certainly worth every dollar. 09. KRS-One KRS-One, leader of Boogie Down Productions - the group that influenced such big names as Mos Def, Gang Starr, Wu-Tang Clan, Talib Kweli, AZ, Ruff Ryders and Mr. Lif. The man who ended an opponents career with a diss track ('The Bridge Is Over' aimed at X-Clan's MC Shan). The man who made beef part of hip hop. The man who played a major role in making Political Rap a genre. The man who's recognizable flow and socially-conscious lyrics made him a major player in the game and a legendary figure in hip hop. 08. Jay-Z Okay, many people don't consider Jay-Z a top 10 emcee these days but I can't see why. After all, he made one of the finest debut albums ever with Reasonable Doubt, established himself as someone you shouldn't start beef with on The Blueprint with 'Takeover'. No-one combined marketability with raw talent like Jay did except perhaps Pac and Biggie. Jay's wordplay and punchlines are on point and his flow recognizably good. Jay-Z is the face of hip hop and he deserves to be, too. 07. Big L The best freestyler and battle emcee ever. Bar no-one. Big L influenced every freestyler that's battling today, his flawless flow and incredible rhyming ability made him one of the most promising talents to ever have come out of New York. His lyrics were shocking, I remember first listening to 'Put It On' and literally gasping at this man's use of rhymes and wordplay. An incredible talent who showed off his storytelling skills with "The Heist" and "Casualties of a Dice Game" and made one of the best songs ever, "Ebonics". It's a huge shame his career was cut short at the age of 24 by a gunman on the NY streets because he would have been number 1 if he'd been given the chance. 06. Ice Cube You can hate him or love him, look at West Coast hip hop today and you'll see every single west coast artist has been influenced by Cube. A member of one of the finest groups of all-time, NWA, and the creator of two masterpieces of gangsta rap ('Death Certificate' and 'AmeriKKKas Most Wanted'). Ice Cube made the west coast a force in hip hop and, despite controversial political views, no-one used such a visceral and rebellious style as Ice Cube did. 05. 2Pac Though slightly over-rated as a lyricist, 2Pac is the name that comes to any non-hip hop fan's mind when you ask them who their favourite rapper is. The reason is simple, 2Pac addressed every issue that it's possible to address and influenced every rap star out today. Me Against The World is his finest work, followed by All Eyez On Me. 2Pac has the greatest number of "classic" songs, 'Dear Mama' is a masterpiece, 'Changes' is the song that most fans have as their number 1 of all-time, Keep Ya Head Up is one of the most uplifting tunes I've ever heard, Brenda's Got A Baby is a fine example of good storytelling and I Ain't Mad Atcha is a brilliant retrospect on life in the 'hood. The list goes on. It's just a shame his career is somewhat tarnished by ludicrous conspiracy theories and constant attempts at resurrecting his music by putting acapellas on new beats by Eminem and other producers. 04. Big Pun The biggest latino rap star ever, I remember buying Yeeeah Baby and listening to 'Off With His Head' over and over and over again. His music never got old. Despite his weight problems, Pun still delivered brilliant lyricism with a graceful, pacy flow that is an alien concept to most overweight rappers nowadays. Weight was always an issue with Pun and led to his downfall, you can only imagine what he would've been by the time he was 35 as his life was tragically cut short via. a heart attack aged just 28. Still an incredible asset who will never be forgotten. Without Big Punisher, Terror Squad is just 'Fat Joe and some other dudes...' 03. Nas Nas is the most versatile emcee ever to grace a mic booth. No exceptions, the man has proven time and time again that he can take any concept complex or simple and turn it into a classic. One of the few rappers to have fallen off and immediately returned to top form in the space of two consecutive albums. You can say he relates race to everything, you can say his tone is boring, you can even say he got destroyed by Jay-Z but you'd be making yourself look foolish. Nas made a top 5 of all time diss record ('Ether'), a top 5 of all time album ('Illmatic'), numerous classic songs ('The World Is Yours', 'If I Ruled the World' and 'Nas Is Like' just to name a few) and made himself known as one of the greatest emcees of all time. Streets Disciple, his latest release, is another brilliant release and he's proven he can still battle with the fantastic diss track 'MC Burial/Don't Body Yourself'. Brilliant. 02. Notorious B.I.G. I find it surprising that people can call Biggie over-rated, to be honest. Depicting ghetto violence as his main theme in his lyrics and using a phenomenal flow, recognizable voice and cool, cocky delivery to brilliant effect to produce 2 classic albums ('Ready To Die' and 'Life After Death'). Songs like 'Juicy', 'Hypnotize' and 'Big Poppa' defined hardcore rap as a solid genre. Biggie's tale of two men performing a robbery ('Gimme The Loot') is known as a top 10 song of all-time. 'Suicidal Thoughts' is a classic song. There are no flaws with Biggie except he didn't release many albums, but his unreleased material is available and it is just as good. Biggie is a martyr to the game today, and should be recognized as a top 5 emcee by everyone. 01. Rakim Oh, yes... Though Rakim never really broke into the mainstream without Eric B. and though he never became a name synonymous with hip hop to most casual fans. Rakim influenced AZ, Nas, 2Pac, Canibus, Lil' Cease, GZA, Method Man, Ghostface, Cormega, Aceyalone, Onyx, Blackchild, Kool G Rap and Gangstarr just to name a few. Every emcee out today owes something to Rakim. His immaculate lyricism and flawless flow made an impact on the industry right from the start, his confident, uncompromising delivery and witty, cocky lyrics make him a class act. Rakim made the use of 'multies' a commonplace in hip hop, whilst most emcees were using one-word rhymes at the end of each bar, Rakim was using rhymes at every opportunity and pioneering the use of conceptual lyrics. And still, even almost 20 years on from his debut, his lyrics sound original and fresh. Untouchable. Let the debate begin?

The man who's recognizable flow and socially-conscious lyrics made him a major player in the game and a legendary figure in hip hop. 08. Jay-Z Okay, many people don't consider Jay-Z a top 10 emcee these days but I can't see why. After all, he made one of the finest debut albums ever with Reasonable Doubt, established himself as someone you shouldn't start beef with on The Blueprint with 'Takeover'. No-one combined marketability with raw talent like Jay did except perhaps Pac and Biggie. Jay's wordplay and punchlines are on point and his flow recognizably good. Jay-Z is the face of hip hop and he deserves to be, too. 07. Big L The best freestyler and battle emcee ever. Bar no-one. Big L influenced every freestyler that's battling today, his flawless flow and incredible rhyming ability made him one of the most promising talents to ever have come out of New York. His lyrics were shocking, I remember first listening to 'Put It On' and literally gasping at this man's use of rhymes and wordplay. An incredible talent who showed off his storytelling skills with "The Heist" and "Casualties of a Dice Game" and made one of the best songs ever, "Ebonics". It's a huge shame his career was cut short at the age of 24 by a gunman on the NY streets because he would have been number 1 if he'd been given the chance. 06. Ice Cube You can hate him or love him, look at West Coast hip hop today and you'll see every single west coast artist has been influenced by Cube. A member of one of the finest groups of all-time, NWA, and the creator of two masterpieces of gangsta rap ('Death Certificate' and 'AmeriKKKas Most Wanted'). Ice Cube made the west coast a force in hip hop and, despite controversial political views, no-one used such a visceral and rebellious style as Ice Cube did. 05. 2Pac Though slightly over-rated as a lyricist, 2Pac is the name that comes to any non-hip hop fan's mind when you ask them who their favourite rapper is. The reason is simple, 2Pac addressed every issue that it's possible to address and influenced every rap star out today. Me Against The World is his finest work, followed by All Eyez On Me. 2Pac has the greatest number of "classic" songs, 'Dear Mama' is a masterpiece, 'Changes' is the song that most fans have as their number 1 of all-time, Keep Ya Head Up is one of the most uplifting tunes I've ever heard, Brenda's Got A Baby is a fine example of good storytelling and I Ain't Mad Atcha is a brilliant retrospect on life in the 'hood. The list goes on. It's just a shame his career is somewhat tarnished by ludicrous conspiracy theories and constant attempts at resurrecting his music by putting acapellas on new beats by Eminem and other producers. 04. Big Pun The biggest latino rap star ever, I remember buying Yeeeah Baby and listening to 'Off With His Head' over and over and over again. His music never got old. Despite his weight problems, Pun still delivered brilliant lyricism with a graceful, pacy flow that is an alien concept to most overweight rappers nowadays. Weight was always an issue with Pun and led to his downfall, you can only imagine what he would've been by the time he was 35 as his life was tragically cut short via. a heart attack aged just 28. Still an incredible asset who will never be forgotten. Without Big Punisher, Terror Squad is just 'Fat Joe and some other dudes...' 03. Nas Nas is the most versatile emcee ever to grace a mic booth. No exceptions, the man has proven time and time again that he can take any concept complex or simple and turn it into a classic. One of the few rappers to have fallen off and immediately returned to top form in the space of two consecutive albums. You can say he relates race to everything, you can say his tone is boring, you can even say he got destroyed by Jay-Z but you'd be making yourself look foolish. Nas made a top 5 of all time diss record ('Ether'), a top 5 of all time album ('Illmatic'), numerous classic songs ('The World Is Yours', 'If I Ruled the World' and 'Nas Is Like' just to name a few) and made himself known as one of the greatest emcees of all time. Streets Disciple, his latest release, is another brilliant release and he's proven he can still battle with the fantastic diss track 'MC Burial/Don't Body Yourself'. Brilliant. 02. Notorious B.I.G. I find it surprising that people can call Biggie over-rated, to be honest. Depicting ghetto violence as his main theme in his lyrics and using a phenomenal flow, recognizable voice and cool, cocky delivery to brilliant effect to produce 2 classic albums ('Ready To Die' and 'Life After Death'). Songs like 'Juicy', 'Hypnotize' and 'Big Poppa' defined hardcore rap as a solid genre. Biggie's tale of two men performing a robbery ('Gimme The Loot') is known as a top 10 song of all-time. 'Suicidal Thoughts' is a classic song. There are no flaws with Biggie except he didn't release many albums, but his unreleased material is available and it is just as good. Biggie is a martyr to the game today, and should be recognized as a top 5 emcee by everyone. 01. Rakim Oh, yes... Though Rakim never really broke into the mainstream without Eric B. and though he never became a name synonymous with hip hop to most casual fans. Rakim influenced AZ, Nas, 2Pac, Canibus, Lil' Cease, GZA, Method Man, Ghostface, Cormega, Aceyalone, Onyx, Blackchild, Kool G Rap and Gangstarr just to name a few. Every emcee out today owes something to Rakim. His immaculate lyricism and flawless flow made an impact on the industry right from the start, his confident, uncompromising delivery and witty, cocky lyrics make him a class act. Rakim made the use of 'multies' a commonplace in hip hop, whilst most emcees were using one-word rhymes at the end of each bar, Rakim was using rhymes at every opportunity and pioneering the use of conceptual lyrics. And still, even almost 20 years on from his debut, his lyrics sound original and fresh. Untouchable. Let the debate begin? DRE I'M DIGGIN YOUR LIST AND IT GOT ME THINKING HARD ABOUT MY 30.
