♥The Red Light District In Amsterdam called                      "De Wallen

History of the Red light District

A red light district is a neighborhood where prostitution and other businesses in the sex industry flourish. The term “red light district” was first recorded in the United States in 1894, in an article in The Sentinel, a newspaper in Milwaukee. Other mentions from the 1890s are numerous, and located all over the United States. The famous Red light district of Amsterdam is called “De Wallen”.

Tourist Attraction

De Wallen is the largest and best-known red light district in Amsterdam and a major tourist attraction. It is located in the heart of the oldest part of Amsterdam, covering several blocks south of the church Oude Kerk and crossed by several canals. The red light district is a network of alleys containing a little less than three hundred tiny one-room cabins rented by female prostitutes who offer their services from behind a window or glass door, typically illuminated with red lights. The area also has a number of sex shops, sex theatres, peep shows, a sex museum, a cannabis museum, and a number of coffee shops that sell marijuana.

Origin of the red light district

The red light district has existed since the 14th century and formerly contained many distilleries, mainly catering to sailors. The name Wallen (walls) refers to the medieval retaining dam walls in the old center of Amsterdam.

Prostitution is legal in the Netherlands, with the exception of streetwalking. However, only EU citizens can work legally in the industry, since no working permits are given for prostitution.

While health and social services are readily available, sex workers are not required to undergo regular health checks. A study conducted before 2006 found that about 7 percent of all Dutch prostitutes (including street prostitutes) have HIV/AIDS. Brothel owners and room operators often require health certificates before employing or leasing rooms

Latest legislation

In September 2007, the city council of Amsterdam at the behest of mayor Job Cohen, concerned about trafficking and pimping in the area, forced the owner Charlie Geerts to close 51 prostitution windows, reducing the total number of windows in De Wallen by a third. Amsterdam authorities bought 18 properties from Geerts, with the aim of developing the area with fashion designers and other up scale businesses.

Mariska Majoor of the Prostitution Information Centre and representatives of the sex worker rights group De Rode Draad have decried the decision, claiming it would not reduce crime but would only lead to higher rent and more competition for the remaining windows.

In January 2008 the city council announced plans to close the Casa Rosso live sex theatre and the Banana bar strip club in the area. Local business owners have formed the group “Platform 1012″ (named after the zipcode of the area) to oppose the efforts of the Amsterdam government.

                          The Sex Museum In Amsterdam..

The Sex Museum.

the "Venustempel" in Amsterdam. A leading museum on the theme of sensual love with an extensive collection of erotic pictures, paintings, objects, recordings, photographs and even attractions. All of the exhibits have been gathered together personally by the owners and can be viewed in their 17th century property on the Damrak.

A Bull's Eye

The "Venustempel" opened its doors in 1985. There were some apprehensive moments at first because the initial collection was limited to a small display of 19th century erotic objects, exhibited in a few showcases. Nobody knew if the idea would really take off. However the first visitors were so enthusiastic that it was decided to expand the collection - the general public was fascinated by the new museum.

The Most Natural Thing.

There were museums for practically everything except sex. Despite sex intriguing (nearly) everybody and being the subject of so much heated discussion, it was not until the "Venustempel" was opened that the historical and artistic aspects of sex were fully highlighted. "The most natural thing in the world" is probably also "the most historically well-documented thing in the world". Looking back with hindsight, this success was to be expected. The art of loving has been translated into a thousand and one different shapes and forms in the course of the centuries and this is what the museum is all about.

An Unusual Find

As the collection steadily grew, it became necessary to create more room for the museum. It was as though fate took a hand: two erotic objects were found in the foundations during one of the first building alterations - a fragment of a Delft Blue tile showing a man with an erection playing cards and a small antique Hermes figurine with an enormous penis. It was discovered later that a Dutch merchant had brought the Hermes figurine back from the Mediterranean hundreds of years before. Was this a portent of the great success that the Sexmuseum Amsterdam would become? Whatever the case, the "Venustempel" is now visited by some 500.000 visitors every year, making it one of the best-visited museums in Amsterdam. Many other sex museums have opened in the last few years; Berlin, Copenhagen and Paris amongst them, but none seem to be as successful as the "Venustempel".

The Labyrinth

The collection is displayed in two houses on the back of the building and a house on the front of the building all connected by a specially designed stairwell.
The result is an exciting labyrinth of rooms and corridors, where the visitor is surprised time and again by tantalising sights. This, together with the ever-growing collection of objects from different ages and cultures, provides hours of viewing and listening pleasure for everyone.

Sex Trough The Ages

There is much discussion about the origin of man. But, whether we are descended from the apes or from Adam and Eve, there would be no life without sex. Sex is self-evident and timeless. The way we experience eroticism however, has changed greatly through the ages. Whoever thinks that we have loose morals, should do some investigating sometime in the Sexmuseum Amsterdam. Some 4000 years of civilisation show that sex in some cultures was a lot more tempestuous than today....

Passionate appetites

Take Classical Antiquity as an example. Cleopatra is known to have shared her bed with a whole regiment of men. With Caesar at the forefront! The ancient Greeks "did it" gladly and often.  It didn't matter if it was with women or with men and of course preferably "Greek style". But the Romans absolutely epitomised wild sexual excesses.  It's no surprise that the word sex has Latin roots!

The Devil's work

Of course there were times when sex, to put it mildly, was repressed. In the Middle Ages sexual pleasure was even believed to be the Devil's work. Those who gave their sexual lusts free rein were persecuted by the Church and ended up on the stake. The wisest course of action was to keep sexual urges hidden...

More and more freedom

During the dark Middle Ages morality had already become less strict. The art of courtship flourished in the Age of Chivalry and eroticism was once again seen as "pure, fine and noble", to reach a gushing climax in the 18th century. This was the age of Casanova, frivolous and charming. People shed their inhibitions and spoke openly of their sexual adventures.

Revolution

For a short time a wind of Puritanism blew across from England; sex was taboo in Victorian times. Fortunately the 20th century put an end to this prudishness. Everybody now wants to know and, especially, do everything again. Men and women demand to live as they want and the emphasis has shifted to equality in bed. The (second) sexual revolution has begun! And the future? We prefer to leave that to your imagination...

Well This is what i could find about it... For a better few you have too visit it and see it with your own eyes....

Here is another Thing About My HomeLand.... A Holiday For The Children.....Here Some History of it....

                           File:Sinter-claes-saint-nicolas-dam800.jpg
                       File:Sinterklaas 2007.jpg

                       File:Zwartepiet.png

History

The Sinterklaas feast celebrates the name day, 6 December, of Saint Nicholas (280–342), patron saint of children and sailors. Saint Nicholas was a bishop of Myra in present-day Turkey. In the 11th century, the saint's bones were taken and moved to southern Italy, an area then ruled by Spain, and relics and his fame spread throughout Europe. The Western Christian Church made his name day a Church holiday. In the north of France, he became the patron saint of school children, then mostly in church schools. The folk feast arose during the Middle Ages. In early traditions, students elected one of them as "bishop" on St. Nicholas Day, who would rule until December 28 (Innocents Day). They sometimes acted out events from the bishop's life. As the festival moved to city streets, it became more lively.[1]

Sinterklaas is assisted by many mischievous helpers with black faces and colourful Moorish dresses, dating back two centuries. These helpers are called 'Zwarte Pieten' (Black Petes). During the Middle-ages Zwarte Piet was a name for the devil. Having triumphed over evil, it was said that on Saint Nicholas eve the devil was shackled and made his slave. Although the character of Black Pete later came to acquire racial connotations, his origins were in the devil figure. This racialization is reflected in the reworking of the characters' mythos. Their blackness was racial, with Pete being an imported African servant of Saint Nicholas since 1850 (though some people say Pete was a slave who, when Sinterklaas bought him his freedom, was so grateful that he stayed to assist him). Today however, the more politically correct explanation that Pete's face is "black from soot" (as Pete has to climb through chimneys to deliver his gifts) is used. Traditionally Saint Nicholas only had one helper, whose name varied wildly. "Piet(er)" the name in use now can be traced back to a book from 1891.

In medieval times, the feast was both an occasion to help the poor, by putting money in their shoes (which evolved into putting presents in children's shoes) and a wild feast, similar to Carnival, that often led to costumes, a "topsy-turvy" overturning of daily roles, and mass public drunkenness. After the Protestant Reformation, England and Germany prohibited celebration of the saint; Netherlands also became a largelyProtestant country following the Reformation, and the government abolished public celebrations in the 17th century, but people protested, including students in Amsterdam. The government allowed celebration within the family. In the nineteenth century, as shown below, the saint became more secularized.[1]

The modern tradition of Sinterklaas as a children's feast was likely confirmed with the illustrated children's book Sint Nicolaas en zijn knecht(Saint Nicholas and His Servant), written in 1850 by the teacher Jan Schenkman (1806–1863). He introduced the images of Sinterklaas' delivering presents by the chimney, riding over the roofs of houses on a gray horse, and arriving from Spain by steamboat, then an exciting modern invention. The book's ideas were incorporated by many across the Netherlands in their personal and communal celebrations. Schenkman also introduced the song "Zie ginds komt de stoomboot" ("See, there comes the steamboat"), still popular in the nation. In Schenkman's version, the medieval figures of the mock devil, which later changed to Oriental or Moorish helpers, was portrayed for the first time as black African and called Zwarte Piet (Black Peter).[1] He is a negro boy who accompanies Sinterklaas and helps him on his rounds (possibly derived from the Dutch colonial experience, or the Moorish occupation of Spain, the main Catholic nation.) In late 20th and 21st century celebrations, numerous people dress as Zwarte Pieten in various cities across the Netherlands.[2]

In the Netherlands, Saint Nicholas' Eve (5 December) is the chief occasion for gift-giving during the Christmas season. The evening is called "sinterklaasavond" or "pakjesavond" ("presents evening"). In the Netherlands, most children receive their presents on this evening. For Belgian and some Dutch children it is customary to put their shoe in front of the fireplace on the evening of 5 December, then go to bed, and find the presents around the shoes on the morning of the 6th.

A Typical Dutch Holiday Treat!

Pepernoten are a cookie-like kind of candy, traditionally associated with the Sinterklaas holiday in the Netherlands.

You will see the pepernoot in two varieties: The first is light brown, randomly shaped, and made from the same ingredients as taai-taai (flour, sugar, anise, cinnamon, and clove). The other variety is more common nowadays; it uses the ingredients that are used for speculaas (also known as Dutch Windmill cookies): Cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, cardamom, and white pepper. The latter is definitely the most tasteful type of pepernoot.

About Sinterklaas Holiday

Read more about a Dutch tradition (Wikipedia).

Sinterklaas is a typical Dutch tradition, though it is celebrated in other parts of Europe as well. The feast celebrates the name day of Saint Nicholas, patron saint of, among other things, children.

In the Netherlands, Saint Nicholas' Eve (December 5) is the chief occasion for gift-giving. The evening is called "sinterklaasavond" or "pakjesavond" ("presents evening"). In the Netherlands, children receive their presents on this evening whereas in Belgium, children put their shoe in front of the fireplace on the evening of December 5, then go to bed, and find the presents around the shoes on the morning of the 6th.

Sinterklaas is the basis for the North American figure of Santa Claus. It is often claimed that during the American War of Independence the inhabitants of New York City, a former Dutch colonial town (New Amsterdam) which had been swapped by the Dutch for other territories, reinvented their Sinterklaas tradition, as Saint Nicholas was a symbol of the city's non-English past.

thanks Diva_L for showing us Rotterdam. you forgot about Sparta Rotterdam, the oldest professional football team in the Netherlands  established on April 1, 1888 and Excelsior, established in 1902. i do agree that Feyenoord, established in 1908 is the biggest and famous of all three.

i also live in Dordrecht, about 15 mins drive from Rotterdam, though i come from Ghana. the Netherlands is my second country and have been living here for over 20 years.

Well I've been to Amsterdam twice & the last time I had a very "interesting" evening in the red light district at one of the clubs there... But I won't lower the tone by going into detail :-)
